Douala danced to Youssoumba.

In Douala, we called dance club music from Abidjan "Mapouka" in general terms. I also grew up referring to Les Youles' music as "Mapouka". Les Youles was a hit band, their music moved bodies like no other. They were high favorites when dancers wanted hit music from Abidjan. The best dance vibes came when Les Youles played, no one captured the dance floor like them.

It has been over 25 years since Les Youles energised the dance floors, and while many of us in Douala did not know the correct names for the music that we danced to, today I do. "Mapouka" as we called it, is a different genre from "Youssoumba", as we danced it. The correct statement is that Douala danced to Youssoumba.

To the spirit of Youssoumba, to the dance floors that it energised in Douala, and
with love and joy, we love and enjoy "Adele".
